Think Happy Thoughts

May 10, 2010

Happy Monday morning.  I hope this week finds you all healthy, wealthy and wise.  This photo was taken from my hotel window in Queens, NY.  It makes me think of the millions of stories out there in the naked city.  The dark skyline set against a backdrop of an endless sky; it’s passionate, it’s irreverent, it’s NYC!

There  is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as the expectation of something tomorrow.

Last weekend my fiance and I went to see our friend Jessica Chance in the starring role of The Emancipation of Mandy & Miz Ellie at the Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Theatre.    It’s a play that  illuminates the story of two women whose lives become inextricably intertwined with a single purchase.   An examination of life surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation,  told through dialogue,  live percussion, rhythmic movement and the songs of freedom.  We were struck by Jessica Chance’s performance.  With a wide range of emotion as well as a subtlety of expression, Jessica was like a pilot flying the audience away to another time and place.  The characters were strong and believable.  The story was heartfelt and gut wrenching at times.   Although, there were a few things I would have liked to have seen done differently.

I found some of the scenes to be too quickly paced.  This didn’t allow for enough emotion to develop within each scene.  The dancers were good, and at times added to the scene with lucidity.  At other times, the choreography seemed to be less articulate.

The percussion and music was pounding, strong and effective.  The songs were also well delivered, they moved through me and left a feeling of connection and empathy for the characters as well as all of those who had struggled through Emancipation.

Overall, the play was great and I would recommend it to you!  Again, the show is playing in the Boston Center for the Arts Plaza Theatre in the South End from now until May 22nd, 2010.  For more information or to get tickets, visit Company One’s website here.

Think Happy Thoughts

May 3, 2010

We photographed such a wonderful wedding this weekend at Independence Harbor in Assonet.  The weather was perfect, the food was delicious and the couple was full of love.  Today’s Think Happy Thoughts photo comes from this wedding because it was so dreamy!  Stay tuned for more photos from this wedding.

To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

Our Wedding Invitations

April 28, 2010

After weeks of planning and procrastinating we finally mailed our wedding invitations!  We’re really happy with them.  We put a lot of heart into this project as well as our time and energy.  DIY invitations are not all they’re cracked up to be; they took quite a while.  But now the deed is done and everyone is RSVP’ing in an earth friendly way, via our wedding website.  We didn’t feel the need to snail mail  RSVP’s.  MyWedding.com has really cute wedding website templates, if you’re interested (they’re super easy to make btw).  The invitations are made of tree free vegetable dyed paper and have flower seeds in them for guests to plant!  I can’t wait to plant ours and have some beautiful flowers grow… such a nice metaphor.  The only question is do we cut them and bring them in the house, or just let them chill outside?  Hmmm….

Think Happy Thoughts

Before  a rolling gray storm cloud stands this strong tree… all by herself.  Wirery and immutable she shows her tenacity when the wind blows hardest.  This is one of my favorite photos from Atamari; a hosteria perched on top of a cliff in Ecuador.

From a  shy, timid girl I had become a woman of resolute character, who could no longer be frightened by the struggle with troubles.

What’s cuter than baby feet… more baby feet, and a whole family to boot (pun intended)!  Here’s a favorite from a recent family photo session with our traveling studio.

Les Dames d’Escoffier

April 20, 2010

Last week I photographed the 50th Anniversary dinner of Les Dames d’Escoffier.  It was an epicures dream, fine wine, 8 scrumptious courses,  good company and at the Omni Parker House, one of the finest hotels in the city.  I was able to witness how a high-end kitchen is run from waitstaff, to plating to the last toast.  Yes it was tense, it was hectic, it was the stuff that food network drama is made of….  but it was inspiring to see how the best of the best strive for perfection.  Here are a few of my favorite photos from the night.

Les Dames d’Escoffier is a world wide philanthropic society of professional women leaders in the fields of food, fine beverage and hospitality. The invitation-only membership, composed of 27 individual chapters across the United States and Canada; it reflects the multifaceted fields of contemporary gastronomy and hospitality.
